A custom cookie box is a food-grade carton designed around a fragile, stackable product. The defining features are an insert or divider that stops cookies sliding into each other, a window that shows the product, and a barrier that keeps butter from staining the board.

  • Inserts stop breakage. Cavity cards, dividers and layer pads cost pennies and remove most transit damage.
  • Windows that sell. Visible product is the strongest conversion lever in the bakery counter category.
  • Dry-side barrier. Tight closure and optional inner bag keep cookies crisp rather than venting them.
  • Gift-grade finishing. Foil and emboss on a low-cost carton support a much higher retail price.

What are custom cookie boxes?

Cookies break in transit because they move. A die-cut card insert with cavities, a set of vertical dividers, or a simple corrugated pad between layers eliminates almost all breakage — and costs far less than the returns and complaints it prevents. For gifting assortments the insert is also what makes the box look curated.

Moisture management runs in the opposite direction to pastry packaging. Cookies need to stay dry and crisp, so a tight-closing carton without ventilation is correct, and for longer shelf life an inner barrier bag inside a printed carton is standard for retail. The carton sells; the bag preserves.

Because cookie boxes are heavily gifted, finishing pays back. Foil, emboss and window combinations turn a low-cost carton into a giftable item that supports a much higher price point, particularly for holiday assortments and corporate gifting programmes.

Popular custom cookie boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

Size (L × W × D) Typical use
4 x 4 x 2 in Two to four cookies, favour pack
6 x 6 x 2 in Half-dozen assortment
8 x 6 x 2 in Dozen cookies in a single layer
10 x 8 x 2.5 in Gift assortment with insert
12 x 9 x 3 in Large hampers and corporate gifts

How to choose custom cookie boxes

  1. Specify the insert with the box

Cavity dimensions must be designed against your actual cookie diameter and thickness.

  2. Do not add ventilation

Unlike pastry boxes, cookie packaging should seal to keep the product crisp.

  3. Use an inner bag for retail shelf life

A printed carton plus a barrier bag is the standard combination for packaged cookies.

  4. Window on the lid for assortments

Top windows show the arrangement; front windows show only the first row.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop cookies breaking in the box?
Use an insert. A die-cut card with cavities, vertical dividers, or corrugated layer pads stop cookies sliding into each other and eliminate most transit breakage for a few cents per box.
Should cookie boxes be ventilated?
No. Unlike pastry and hot-food packaging, cookie boxes should seal tightly to keep the product crisp. For retail shelf life, add an inner barrier bag inside the printed carton.
Can cookie boxes have windows?
Yes, and they are among the most effective conversion tools in the category. Top windows show the whole arrangement in an assortment; front windows only reveal the first row.
Are cookie boxes food safe?
Yes, on food-grade board with compliant inks and coatings. Butter-rich recipes need a PFAS-free grease-resistant barrier or a clay-coated food-contact liner.
What is the minimum order for custom cookie boxes?
100 boxes per size and artwork, with inserts quoted alongside. Price breaks at 250, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 units.
Can I run seasonal versions without new box tooling?
Yes — use a neutral tray with printed sleeves, or keep one carton and version a belly band. Both are far cheaper than separate printed boxes per season.
