A custom tin box is a tinplate steel container decorated by offset printing directly onto the metal before forming. Tins are airtight or near-airtight, effectively indestructible in transit, and are kept and reused far longer than any paper package — which is why confectionery, tea and premium gifting use them.

  • Standard shapes, custom print. Full bespoke graphics on existing tooling means no tooling charge.
  • Real barrier protection. Excludes light, oxygen and moisture — often replacing an inner foil pouch entirely.
  • Artwork designed for the draw. We keep critical detail out of deep-formed radii where print distorts.
  • Kept and reused. Tins stay in customers' homes for years, extending brand exposure long past the sale.

What are custom tin boxes?

Printing on metal is a different discipline from printing on board. Artwork is offset-printed onto flat tinplate sheets and cured, then the sheets are stamped and formed, so the graphics stretch slightly at the corners and radii. Good tin artwork is designed with that distortion in mind, keeping critical detail away from deep draws.

Tooling is the cost driver. Standard shapes — round, square, rectangular, hinged-lid — use existing dies and carry no tooling charge; a genuinely bespoke shape requires new tooling that only amortises over large volumes. For most brands, a standard shape with fully custom print gives the bespoke effect at a fraction of the cost.

Tins also deliver a barrier no carton can match. Light, oxygen and moisture are all excluded, which extends shelf life for tea, coffee, confectionery and cosmetics. Where a paper carton would need an inner foil pouch, a tin frequently replaces both layers.

Custom Tin Boxes: styles and constructions

The construction decides how the box closes, how much it protects and what it costs. These are the formats we produce most often for custom tin boxes.

Hinged-lid rectangular tin

Attached lid for mints, pastilles and pocket products.

Square gift tin

Efficient shelf footprint with a large printable face.

Window tin

Die-cut aperture in the lid with a clear panel.

Materials

0.20–0.25 mm tinplate steel

Food-grade internal lacquer
Required for direct food contact; protects against acidic contents.
Matte or gloss over-varnish
Protects the print and sets the tactile finish.
Embossed tinplate
Raised or recessed detail formed into the metal itself.

Popular custom tin boxes sizes

Every order is cut to your interior dimensions — these are the sizes customers request most often, and a useful starting point if you are not sure where to begin.

Size (L × W × D) Typical use
3 in round x 1 in Balms, mints, small confectionery
4 in round x 3 in Loose-leaf tea, coffee, candles
6 x 4 x 2 in Gift sets and stationery
8 x 6 x 2.5 in Confectionery assortments
10 x 7 x 3 in Hampers and multi-item kits

How to choose custom tin boxes

  1. Use a standard shape

Bespoke tooling only pays back at very high volumes. Custom print on a standard shape looks equally bespoke.

  2. Specify food-grade lacquer for edibles

Especially for acidic or oily contents, where bare tinplate is not suitable.

  3. Keep fine detail off the corners

Forming stretches the print at radii; small type there will distort.

  4. Allow longer lead times

Metal decorating and forming run 15–20 business days, longer than any paper format.

The headline price includes local VAT or GST where that market requires it. If you are VAT-registered you reclaim that, so the excl. tax column is your real cost. US and Canadian prices add sales tax at invoicing instead. Volume pricing improves at 250, 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 units — see wholesale custom boxes for the volume tiers.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are custom tin boxes food safe?
Yes, when specified with a food-grade internal lacquer. The lacquer is essential for acidic, oily or moist contents; bare tinplate is only suitable for dry, non-reactive goods in an inner wrapper.
Do custom tins require expensive tooling?
Not if you use a standard shape — round, square, rectangular or hinged-lid tins use existing dies and carry no tooling charge. Fully bespoke shapes need new tooling that only amortises over very large volumes.
How are tins printed?
Artwork is offset-printed directly onto flat tinplate sheets, over-varnished and cured, then the sheets are stamped and formed. Because forming stretches the metal, we keep fine detail away from deep-drawn corners and radii.
Are tin boxes recyclable?
Yes. Tinplate steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world and is accepted by kerbside metal recycling across North America, Europe and Australasia — usually with a higher real-world recovery rate than laminated paperboard.
What is the minimum order for custom printed tins?
100 units on a standard shape with custom print. Bespoke-shape tins have far higher minimums because of tooling amortisation.
How long do custom tins take to produce?
15–20 business days after artwork approval, plus transit. Metal decorating and forming take longer than any paper-based format, so plan seasonal programmes accordingly.
