A custom product box is the primary package a customer sees on a shelf or in their hands — the printed carton that holds one SKU, carries the barcode and regulatory copy, and does the selling. It is specified around the product's exact dimensions rather than a stock size.

What are custom product boxes?
Primary packaging carries obligations a shipper never does: a scannable barcode with the correct quiet zone, net contents, country of origin, and any category-specific labelling. Getting the panel layout right at dieline stage — front, back, two sides, top and bottom — is what stops a reprint after the first retail audit.
Product boxes are usually SBS or folding boxboard between 300 and 450 gsm. Below 300 gsm the box feels flimsy on shelf; above 450 gsm the creases start to crack unless the board is scored correctly along the grain. Grain direction is the detail most first-time buyers miss.
Because the box is handled at retail, scuff resistance matters. Matte lamination looks premium but shows fingerprints; anti-scuff matte varnish gives most of the look with better wear. On dark solid colours especially, an anti-scuff coating is close to mandatory.

Frequently Asked Questions
What board weight should a retail product box be?
300–350 gsm SBS suits most small SKUs, 400–450 gsm is better for large panels or heavier contents. Below 300 gsm the box feels flimsy on shelf; above 450 gsm creases can crack unless scoring follows the board grain.
Can you add a window to my product box?
Yes. We die-cut the aperture and patch it with clear PET, or PLA film if you need a compostable option. Windows reduce panel stiffness, so we usually step the board up one caliper.
Will my barcode scan reliably?
We check symbol magnification, quiet zones and placement against GS1 guidance before plates are made, and we avoid printing barcodes across creases or on metallised areas where scanners struggle.
What is the difference between a straight and reverse tuck end box?
On a straight tuck end both flaps fold the same way, giving a cleaner front face for shelf display. A reverse tuck end folds them in opposite directions, which nests more efficiently on the sheet and costs slightly less.
What is the minimum order for custom product boxes?
100 units per SKU and artwork on digital production. Offset becomes more economical from around 2,500 units, with further breaks at 5,000 and 10,000.
How do I supply artwork?
We send you a layered dieline in AI or PDF. Supply print-ready CMYK artwork at 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed, fonts outlined, and any spot or Pantone colours clearly named.
